Will Rahul Dravid continue as India’s T20 coach?

Rahul Dravid News

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eager to extend Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach until the T20 World Cup scheduled for June next year.

Dravid’s contract has expired at the end of the World Cup and the BCCI is prepared to offer the former Test No. 3, a new contract.

In the post-match conference after the World Cup Final, Dravid stated that “he had no time to think” about continuing with the Indian team.

Currently, VVS Laxman is working as an interim coach with the Indian team, who are busy playing a bilateral T20I series with Australia.

Dravid, who coached in all three formats, is highly regarded by India captain Rohit Sharma and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, who advocate for his continuation until the next T20 World Cup.

If Dravid accepts the offer, there’s a likelihood that key support staff members like bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour will also receive new contracts. The decision aligns with the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, emphasizing stability and continuity in the coaching staff.

However, it remains to be seen, if he accepts BCCI’s offer of extension.

Who were BCCI’s candidates for the job?

Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra, a former fast bowler, was offered to take charge of the T20 format after India’s loss in the World Cup final.

But Nehra has reportedly declined to take up the offer. He boasts of an extremely good cricketing record as he fired GT to the IPL trophy in 2022 before finishing as runners-up in 2023.
