Shubman Gill, the youngest cricketer to score a double century, has filled our hearts and screens with love and prayers. Shubman Gill is the most recent batsman to emerge from India’s batting manufacturing line. He rose to prominence at the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup, where he batted third and helped India win a record-tying fourth world championship, scoring 418 runs at an average of 104.50. Gill, the 2018 IPL Player of the Tournament, was selected by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1.8 crore (USD 280,000).

Shubman Gill was born on September 8, 1999, in Fazilka, Punjab. His family possessed some agricultural areas. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, a farmer, had a desire of playing cricket but was unable to realize it. Instead, he wanted to prepare Gill to be a strong cricket player. He had seen his son’s cricketing aptitude at an early age and was pleased about the opportunity to help him grow. Gill received some coaching from his school before attending the Punjab Cricket Association Academy.

On his Punjab Under-16 state debut, he achieved an unbeaten double century in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. In the 2014 Punjab Inter-District Under-16 competition, he hit 351 runs and shared a 587-run opening stand with Nirmal Singh.

Domestic Career

Gill made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy, batting one down. Later, in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy against Bengal, he batted as an opener and scored his first half-century before moving it up the next game with a first-class century against Services.

In August of that year, he was named captain of the India Blue side for the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy. Gill was named captain of India C for the 2019-20 Deodhar Trophy in October 2019. In November 2019, he headed a side in the league as the youngest cricketer ever. He broke Virat Kohli’s record, which he set when he was 21 years and 124 days old in the 2009-10 season.

Gill quit the Kolkata Knight Riders before the 2022 IPL auction and was chosen by the newly formed Gujarat Titans franchise. Gill was later hired by Glamorgan as their overseas player for the remainder of the 2022 County Championship season in September 2022. He made his debut against Worcestershire.

International Career

In February 2017, Gill was a member of India’s U-19 team that defeated England U-19 in a series. In December 2017, he was named vice-captain of India’s team for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Later, on January 31, 2019, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut against New Zealand in the fourth ODI of the series at Hamilton’s Seddon Park. He was named to India’s Test team again in February 2020, this time for a series against New Zealand.

Gill made his Test debut for India against Australia on December 26, 2020, assisting India in a comeback victory in the second game of the series. In the fourth Test at the Gabba, he made 91 runs to help India win the series.
