The Gujarat Titans are set to name a new captain for the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), with Hardik Pandya’s move to the Mumbai Indians set to be confirmed soon. Hardik led GT to the IPL trophy in 2022 and a runner-up finish in 2023, leaving the new skipper with big shoes to fill.

Gujarat Titans are set to have a new captain for the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), with Hardik Pandya set to make a sensational move back to Mumbai Indians (MI) in a stunning trade deal that will also seem to see Cameron Green join the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

While Rashid Khan has been GT’s vice captain over the last two seasons and led the franchise on multiple occasions in Hardik’s absence and the presence of Kane Williamson in the set-up, who not only has experience leading teams in the IPL before but also is among the most respected captains in the international cricket circuit,

A report in the Times of India (TOI) has stated that star Indian cricketer Shubman Gill is set to be named the new captain of the Titans’ for the new season. Gill will become the Gujarat-based franchise’s second full-time skipper after Hardik when he takes charge of the team in the 2024 season.

The TOI report adds that sources have revealed that the Titans’ management has already held a long meeting with Gill to discuss plans for the auction, which is set to take place on December 19 in Dubai.

Gill has been part of the GT set-up since their inception in the 2022 season, after they purchased him for Rs. 8 crore in the pre-auction draft. In a surprising move, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) did not retain Gill, giving GT the chance to buy him before the mega auction.

In his two-year stay at GT, Gill has scored a total of 1373 runs in 33 matches at an average of 47.34. He won the orange cap in the 2023 season with a stunning tally of 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33, which included three centuries. This is the second-highest tally by a player in a single edition of the league in history.

Under Hardik’s captaincy, GT won the title in 2022 and finisher runner’s-up in 2023 only after losing the final to CSK in a last-ball thriller, leaving Gill with big shoes to fill.
